Grocery Store Chain in Virginia

What are they going to build at the corner of Indian River Road and Providence Road in Virginia Beach? They have just recently torn down a building and are now clearing that land and the big lot behind it. — Delores Hutton

“We have started site work on that property, but I’m unable to provide an opening date, ” said Will Harwood, spokesperson for the German grocery giant with 10, 000 stores in 27 countries. “We expect to open our first stores in the United States no later than 2018.”

The no-frills retailer – similar to Aldi – offers discount products on fresh meat, produce and bakery items, as well as household goods.

The chain has its U.S. headquarters in Arlington and a distribution center near Fredericksburg. The Virginian-Pilot previously reported that Norfolk approved a rezoning request last September that would allow a Lidl (pronounced LEED-el) store at 6440 N. Military Hwy. in Norfolk.

“We are in the early stages of launching in the United States, and we’re currently looking at sites from New Jersey to Georgia, ” said Harwood. “We will use the same format that made Lidl so successful in Europe; delivering customers the highest quality products at the best prices.”
