Hobby Stores in Virginia

BRISTOL, Va. — The Twin City could soon have a Hobby Lobby store.

A spokesman for the Oklahoma City-based chain of arts and crafts stores confirmed plans Monday to open a location in Bristol, Virginia next year.

“We expect construction to begin in March 2018 with the store opening in the summer of 2018, ” said Bob Miller, corporate communications director, in a written statement to the Bristol Herald Courier. “I don’t have specifics on the size of the Bristol location, but most Hobby Lobby stores average about 55, 000 square feet.”

Miller declined comment on the store’s planned location, saying only that it will be built in the city.

An official with Interstate Development, which is overseeing The Falls retail project off Interstate 81’s Exit 5 in Bristol, Virginia, said Hobby Lobby will not be part of the development, and the national chain is “working with other developers.”

The proposed development called Jefferson Trace Shopping Center, which is expected to be built near Lee Highway off Exit 7, is in Washington County, just outside the city limits.

Last year, Alabama-based Blackwater Resources submitted plans to the county to build a 90-acre shopping center on the old Trammel property. John Abernathy, developer of the planned center, did not return requests for comment Monday.

Site plans show three anchor stores, each totaling around 55, 000 square feet, including Publix. On Monday, a spokeswoman for the grocery chain said the company still plans to open a store in Bristol.

“At this time, we still anticipate construction on our Bristol store to begin in 2017, with a targeted opening date of 2018, ” said Kimberly Reynolds, media relations manager for Publix.

Alicia Roland, public information officer for Washington County, said in a statement that the county has not heard anything about Hobby Lobby opening a local store.

According to Miller, the store is expected to bring 30-50 jobs to the region, pay $15.35 per hour for full-time associates and $10.23 for part-time associates.

The closest Hobby Lobby store is in Kingsport, Tennessee. There are nine Hobby Lobby stores in Virginia.
